What is WebP?

WebP is an image file format that offers both lossy and lossless compression options. It is derived from the VP8 image encoding format and is considered a sister project to the WebM multimedia format. It was developed by Google after acquiring On2 Technologies and is released under the terms of the BSD license.

WebP supports a maximum pixel size of 16383x16383. Lossy-compressed WebP only supports 8-bit YUV 4:2:0 format. Lossless-compressed (reversible compression) WebP supports VP8L encoding and 8-bit ARGB color space. Both lossy and lossless compression support alpha transparency, ICC color profiles, and XMP metadata.

WebP comes in both static and animated modes. Animated WebP (WebP animation) supports both lossy and lossless compression, ICC color profiles, XMP metadata, and alpha transparency.

What are the advantages of WebP over PNG and JPG?

WebP has the advantage of having better image data compression algorithms, resulting in smaller image sizes while maintaining the same image quality as perceived by the human eye. It also has both lossless and lossy compression modes, alpha transparency, and animation capabilities, with excellent, stable, and consistent conversion results on both JPEG and PNG formats.

When WebP compresses a JPG to 90% of the original image quality, the image size is reduced by about 50%. When WebP compresses a JPG to 80% of the original image quality, the image size is reduced by 60% to 80%.

The superior compression performance of lossless WebP compared to JPG is mainly due to its advanced predictive coding technology and macroblock adaptive quantization, which improves compression efficiency, while the use of Boolean arithmetic coding improves compression performance by 5% to 10% compared to Huffman coding.

According to early tests by Google, lossless WebP reduces file size by 45%, even compared to PNG files found on the web, even after those PNG files have undergone PNGCRUSH and PNGOUT processing, WebP can still reduce file size by 28%. Currently, WebP can reduce image size by an average of 70%. WebP is the future trend of image formats.
